Every once in a while, a book comes along that challenges the easy-believism of the modern church. I can think of numerous books that fit into this category. Most of these books demand that the modern church return to the biblical model of salvation that called for the lordship of Jesus rather than a mere affirming attitude of Jesus. Crossway has published a new and dare I say edgy volume that challenges the church called Am I Really a Christian?
Mike McKinley (author of Church Planting is for Wimps) pens this book and does so in his trademark style. While the content of this book is certainly high impact and thought provoking (more on this later), McKinley’s work is filled with hilarious sarcasm and entertaining personal stories. I can honestly say that Mike McKinley has become one of my favorite authors not just because his content is excellent but because he is such an engaging writer.
In terms of theological content, McKinley strikes at the heart of easy-believism. Each chapter begins with “You are not a Christian…” followed by the content of the chapter. McKinley pulls no punches in discussing the difference between being a disciple of Jesus (saving faith) and a cultural Christian (non-saving affirmation). Further, McKinley calls those claiming Christian to examine their hearts if they love sin, stuff or themselves more than others.
In summary, Am I Really a Christian? is an excellent, easy-to-read book that is greatly needed. Weaving theology, application and entertaining illustrations, McKinley has written a modern classic (in my opinion). If every pastor could get every member of his congregation to read this book, what a difference could be made!
